Zoe M strikes again! Zoe and Dhruva showed me this great video they used to learn the capitals of some South American countries. Now I can't get it out of my head so I figured I would share it with all of you.
This past week in class, students have been researching and becoming more informed about the presidential election. Each student (or pair of students) picked an issue or policy that interested them and became experts on the topic. They created slideshows and webpages to showcase what they learned about the issue, the pros & cons of their issue, and how each candidate felt about the issue. Check out all their hard work on our class election website ottoson740electionproject.weebly.com
A student shared another video with me by the same singer and illustrator. I liked it so much I thought I would share it with all of you! Thanks Zoe M. !
We will be having a map quiz on Eastern Europe next Tuesday. Students should be prepared to identify 18 out of the 23 countries and their capitals.
Last week we completed our first group project. The students did a great job researching, writing and presenting information about the 5 themes of geography. After we completed the project and did self reflections, we debriefed as a class about what characteristics make a good group member. Below is a word cloud that represents the collective response by the students in the 740s. These will be the standards that the students will hold themselves and each other to for our next group project.
So here is a list of some of the questions I received from open house last night.
Question: How much notice to students receive about upcoming quizzes, test and projects?
Answer: Your son or daughter will be told about an upcoming test or quiz at least a week ahead of time.
All projects will have plenty of class time to work on, but could vary from a 2 day assignment to a week.
Question: When can students come to you for extra help?
Answer: My after school help hours are on Thursday. However, I am at school usually by 7 am and stay after school most days until 3:45 - 4pm. If your child would like more support just have them schedule a time with me.
Question: Do the kids receive a keyboard and cover with their iPads?
Answer: All the iPads will have a cover, but do not come with keyboard. Your child will not necessarily need a keyboard unless they prefer to type. I personally use a stylus (it's also cheaper). Students can take notes with their iPads using a program called noteability which they can write with their fingertips instead of a keyboard.
Question: What is the best way to contact you if we have questions or concerns about our child?
Answer: Email is the best way to reach me. I should be able to get back to you within 24 hours. If it is something more urgent please call the main office.
If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to reach out to me.
To be successful this year in Geography your student will need the following supplies with them everyday. If your student has difficulty accessing these supplies please let me know so we can figure out the best option for your son or daughter. Along with bringing in these supplies, each student should have his or her binder set-up. I will be checking to make sure each student has these supplies and their binders set up on Friday, September 9th.
❏ 3 ring binder
❏ Loose leaf paper
❏ Agenda book
❏ A writing utensil
❏ Colored pencils
❏ Page dividers
Each students binder should have 3 page dividers that are labeled the following; reference, homework/note, and vocabulary. At the back of the binder, students should have a stack of loose leaf paper.
